Tesla will use new battery technology in Berlin

Elon Musk, head of the Tesla factory in Berlin, Germany, has announced plans to build a model Y car with new batteries from next year.

The new design could put Tesla at "significant production risk."

Tesla plans to make a new version of the Model Y at its Berlin factory. There is also a possibility of making new battery cells in the same factory.

Last month, Musk said the German plant would be used to demonstrate how Tesla cars are made. The company plans to start producing the Model Y at the Giga Factory in Berlin in the second half of 2021.

Tesla's new cylinder-shaped battery cell, called the 460, can store relatively more power and is easier to build. The new design will also help to halve the cost of batteries. The company will be able to increase the production of batteries a hundred times by 2030.

Musk said on Wednesday, it would take about two more years for the Fremont and Shanghai factories to start working on the new technology.

"Once the new technology is proven, the Fremont and Shanghai factories will change in two years," Musk said.

Just last week, Tesla reported that 1,39,300 vehicles were delivered in the third quarter, a record for the company in one quarter.
