Twitter will add labels to state accounts, not just in certain states, but around the world. If there is an "underlying motive" behind the tweet, then the microblogging site will take action. |
Twitter chief Jack Dorsey said on Friday. Dorsey took part in the virtual organization of the 'Oslo Freedom Forum'. There, he spoke in support of the use of Twitter by leaders in countries such as China and Iran and said it would cover global labels.
The Oslo Freedom Forum was organized by the New York-based non-profit organization Human Rights Foundation. Dorsey said Twitter would add labels to give users more information about state-related account activities.
Last month, for the first time, Twitter came up with their own label feature. The site has initially been labeled in China, France, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Many activists around the world use Twitter, in some cases using pseudonyms. Activists have resorted to pseudonyms to speak out for human rights in countries such as Saudi Arabia and China, Reuters reported.
But the problem is the 'bot' account. Numerous bot accounts are still spreading misinformation on the site. The platform has also been criticized for failing to take effective action to stop it.
Dorsey said his organization has started using signals to handle bots. This is how you start talking about certain things quickly after creating a new account.
He added that Twitter was fighting against misinformation campaigns in this way, and was protecting activists who took refuge under pseudonyms. "A pseudonym is an identity that we build, and we're interested in evaluating and protecting it," Dorsey said.
Questions were raised on the Twitter-forum as to whether the leaders of Iran and China were showing a double standard by taking a place on the platform. In response, Dorsey said, "It's important to understand how they're thinking."
"It's important to understand how they're talking about their rule around the world." - Dorsey says in answer to the question.
