At Lebanon's future risk, urgent help is needed: Macron
"Our job
today is to coordinate our assistance at the field level as quickly and
efficiently as possible," Macron said via video link at an emergency
donors' conference on Sunday to stand by Beirut. So that it can reach the
people of Lebanon as soon as possible. ”
Lebanon's
economy has been in turmoil for the past few years due to extreme political
turmoil and the burden of huge debt burdens.
Last Tuesday,
a huge explosion in the port area of the capital Beirut brought the country
to the brink of collapse. The death toll from the blast has risen to 158. More
than six thousand people were injured. Homes of two and a half lakh people have
been destroyed.
Macron
visited Beirut last Thursday, two days after the blast. After monitoring the
situation there, he held an emergency online conference with world leaders on
Sunday to quickly extend a helping hand to the country.
In his
opening remarks, Macron said there should be coordination of international
assistance for Lebanon through the United Nations.
The
2,750-tonne ammonium nitrate, which has been lying in a neglected-unsafe
condition at a Beirut port warehouse for nearly six years, was blamed for
Tuesday's horrific explosion. So that the whole city trembled.
But those
flammable substances were not supposed to go to Lebanon. The people of the
country are outraged by this. They have started a movement to hold the
government accountable for this negligence.
The people
have not trusted the current Lebanese government for a long time. Corruption is
rampant in the administration. In this situation, international leaders are
also concerned about the extent to which the aid sent by them will not reach
the people of the country.
"I assure you that the assistance provided for the reconstruction of Lebanon will not go to the corrupt," Macron said.
Beirut has
been making headlines in the international media for the past few days due to
the horrific explosion and its devastation. Many countries have expressed
interest in sending emergency aid to Lebanon, such as medical equipment. But so
far no country has pledged financial assistance, according to Reuters.
"The
responsibility of the international community is to help," Macron said. We
should stand by them. Lebanon's future is in grave danger. "
Iran and
Israel are not taking part in the video conference, Reuters reported.
According to
the BBC, representatives of the European Union, China, Russia, Egypt, Jordan,
the United Kingdom, and the United States are expected to attend the
conference. There will also be representatives from the United Nations, the
IMF, the Red Cross, and the Arab League.
In a tweet,
Trump said he had spoken to Macron about the disaster in Beirut and would
attend the conference.
"Everyone
wants to help," he tweeted.
