Hundreds die in lightning strikes in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh

Hundreds of
people have been killed in two days of lightning strikes in India's two
northern states, officials say. |
The Bihar Disaster Management
Authority has reported that 63 people have been killed and at least 20 others
seriously injured in lightning strikes in their state. The injured have been
admitted to the hospital.

in lightning strikes in neighboring Uttar Pradesh, officials say.
In addition to lightning,
torrential rains and storms have already damaged numerous trees, crops, and
resources in the central and northern states. Residents of the states have been
advised to be vigilant as the weather may get worse in the coming days.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has
already expressed his condolences to the families of the victims; He also
instructed to start relief work immediately.
Bihar Disaster Management Minister
Laxmishwar Rai has said that a large number of people have been killed in
lightning strikes in recent years.
He said more than half of the 73
people killed in the last few days were in the northern and eastern districts
of the state.
Most of the deaths in Uttar Pradesh
took place in Deoria district, near the Prayagraj and Nepal borders, according
to various authorities there.
According to the country's Crime
Records Bureau, an average of 2,000 people have been killed in lightning
strikes in India every year since 2005.
In 2016, the number of deaths due
to lightning in the country was more than two thousand 300.
In the same year, 36,649
thunderstorms were recorded in 13 hours in Andhra Pradesh alone.
